Hello from Airlie Beach!
Claire and Kira are now experiencing some rain as they wait for their sailing trip in the Whitsundays. It is, however, suppose to clear up for the weekend! We head out on the sailing trip friday, saturday and sunday. Fingers are crossed that the weather report is actually true. Apparently there is another cyclone starting up. eeek. After Fraser Island we headed to a small town called 1770 or Agnes Water. Great town! It was basically established in 2000, and a lot of development has occured since then, but it was nice to get out of the busy hostels for a bit and relax. The first day there Kira and Claire tried to beat the ocean for the 20th time. This time, however, we were successful. We went out on a sunset sea kayak, and had some great fun. We paddled around to a secluded beach, played in the water and then headed out to the waves. From the beach the waves didn't look too big but once we got out there the winds were fierce and the waves were indeed big. There were two people per kayak, and about 6 groups. We were able to successfully ride/surf about 3 huge waves. The one time we actually soared. Claire was in the front and she looked like she was flying. At that moment we finally declared a defeated ocean once and for all. Other groups were having a lot of trouble however and the winds proved to be too strong for them and they were actually getting swept away. Our tour guide was able to gather them and ended up having to tow one group in. We headed back to the beach and had some wine and snacks. Later that evening we met up with people in our group and some friends from our hostel for some drinks at the local tavern......the night later ended with a big swim in the ocean. The next was was a bit rainy so we got some laundry done and did some reading and rested up for yesterday which was a big day indeed. We got up and rented a surf board and tried our luck at surfing once again. This time we took out a 7 foot board instead of an 8 foot. Definiely much harder. By the end of 3 hours both Claire and Kira had imporved significantly from their previous lesson! Both were able to stand about 50% of the time and ride the wave in. Both also had some more great bails. After we spent the day surfing we went back to the hostel had a shower and then headed out on a Scooteroo/Chopper tour! A giant group of us drove around the town of 1770 on scooters and chopper. It was quite the sight. After getting lost at the beginning due to some slow drivers ahead, we caught back up with everyone and enjoyed another sunset cruise. A great day it was. We then hopped on the overnight greyhound bus and got into Airlie beach at 630 this morning. We will check back in after our Whitsundays sailing adventure. Have a wonderful weekend!
